  • About last night (February 23) at Thruway Shopping Center: Two women, one younger and the other older, stopped me and asked for $. What do you need? Something to eat. What do you want? They pointed to McDonalds. Ok, meet over there and I’ll buy you something. We met and they pointed out a third person, a young man, sitting at a table waiting on them. It appeared their belongings were in Book, travel bags on the table. They stood at the counter looking at the menu for more than a minute. What do you want? We are trying to be economical, the older woman said. Order what you want. And they did, finally. 3 Big Mac meals. The conversation led to them sharing they were here because someone was in the hospital. They purchased a one-way ticket from Ohio here, and don’t know how they are going to get back and have no place to live. They wanted to show me proof they were from Ohio. I don’t need that, you said you were hungry. The older woman asked if I was going to or coming from Bible study. I gave them a few extra $ and wished them well. (Pray for those in situations like this).

  • I am absolutely blown away by the kindness, prayers, thoughtfulness, cards, text messages, emails, calls, social media posts, tributes, food, and the many additional expressions of love during last week (the passing of my father, Eldridge D. Alston). We grieve, we are sad, we hurt, the loss has been cumulative, yet, we carry on, living by the example of Eldridge D. Alston. I have a heart of thanksgiving right now for all of you; for Pastor Nathan E. Scovens and his church (Galilee Missionary Baptist Church) for all they have done; the members of St. James AME church and their role and impact on our family; for my Pastor, Prince R. Rivers and the support from United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist church; the Forsyth County Sheriff’s department for their presence (as honor guards, pall bearers and escorts), and for the more than able assistance of Chaplain Glen Davis. Russell Funeral Home was outstanding from start to finish. A special shout to James M. DuBose Jr. and the Culinary staff at Galilee (David). From my family to everyone, thanks!
