Give Thanks For (Praise Reports):

  • The return of “Living Room” theatre – community outreach from the NC Black Rep.
  • Happy wedding anniversary to Larente and Goya Hamlin (1 year).
  • Livingstone College Board of Trustees new orientation, board retreat, board meeting and convocation – an interesting, informative and productive week.
  • W-S Alumni chapter meeting – a recent graduate (May 2016) joined us.
  • Eldridge Alston – now home from the rehab facility and in good spirits.
  • NC Black Repertory Company Marvtastic Bash was a success.
  • Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build – United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church women participated in the build. They were joined by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia. She was in W-S last weekend and took pictures with  participants at the Habitat house in Happy Hill, part of which was originally known as Liberia. She is the first president of a WS sister city nation to visit Winston Salem and Africa’s first elected female head of state. Livingstone College also presented her with scholarships for students from Liberia.
  • My niece, Yasmeen and Jar’La for organizing help for their colleagues in La impacted by the flood several weeks ago.
  • People who take a stand for justice.
  • The official opening of the National Museum of African American History in DC.
  • Rev. Richard Price and his message to students during the Livingstone College Convocation. What a story this’06  graduate of Livingstone had to share. He is one of 11 children born to a mother on drugs and none of them know their father. He was in foster care. Adopted at 3. Dropped out of high school. He was pointed to LC and given a chance. He said to press forward. He now has two masters degrees, and is a candidate for his doctorate next year.

Please Pray:

  • Sand Lomax – recently had surgery and continues to recuperate at home.
  • Robert Scott (and family) – on the transition of his mother, Flora Scott Bass.
  • Marcella Jordan (and family) – on the transition of their father.
  • Sarah (my wife) – as she begins physical therapy and traction.
  • Angela Hawkins (and her family) – on the loss of her stepbrother.
  • Former Presiding Elder Wilder – he had a heart attack recently and is now at home recuperating.
  • Sylvia Shelton – She found out she had cancer two years ago. She has been cancer free over a year but just found out that a small amount of cancer has returned.
  • The families and friends of the men killed in Charlotte and Tulsa
  • That we not become numb to all the violence.

Give Thanks For (Praise Reports):

  • Stephen Ministry at UMMBC and Stephen Minister spotlight: Joe Ward.
  • The life of Steven Stewart – a call of appreciation from his cousin and her mother for the column last week.
  • Meeting with David Piner (Arbor Acres) and Richard Gottlieb (Senior Services) on a partnership with the NC Black Repertory Company.
  • Lunch speaker for the High Point SHRM chapter: Being Productive Under Stress.
  • Cookout at a friend’s home – great fellowship, laughter and food.
  • A group of people who donated money to provide bottled water (200 cases) to the residents of Rolling Hills complex. $400 remained and was given to the complex Community Center for school supplies for children of the residents.
  • The return of “Living Room” theatre – support for the NC Black Repertory Company start with this.
  • Happy birthday, Gloria Alston  (9/22) – my sister would have been 61. We miss you.
  • Family and Friends Day at St. Stephens Episcopal Church yesterday – thanks for the invitation, Sylvia.
  • Happy wedding anniversary to my nephew and his wife, Wali and Stephanie.

Please Pray:

  • Eldridge Alston (my father) – He continues to have some swelling in his legs. He is in good spirit.
  • Bus crash with the football team from Clinton, SC traveling to a game – multiple deaths and injures. Pray for the families and friends, especially those who were falling the bus and witnessed the accident.
  • Dr. Rodney (and family) – her niece, Arleen Arias, 51 died last Sunday morning. She was ill for a few days.
  • Rick Pierce (and family) – his mother has transitioned and her services were last week.
  • Jean Allison – She was in bad accident several weeks ago and is in rehab.
  • Sand Lomax – recently had surgery and continues to recuperate at home.
    Sarah (my wife) – MRI follow up to determine options for treatment this week. Traction and physical therapy are scheduled.
  • Former Presiding Elder Wilder – he had a heart attack recently and is now at home recuperating.
  • Cornelious Flood (and family) – his sister (Mary) lost her husband (Steve) suddenly, one day after successful knee surgery.
  • Sylvia Shelton – She found out she had cancer two years ago. She has been cancer free over a year but just found out that a small amount of cancer has returned.

  • It has been three years now since my niece, Alana Alston, died. Her birthday (25th) was last week and we celebrate her short life.
  • Shanika Gray – her sister came through surgery, is awake, alert and eating.

  • Eldridge Alston (my father) – is out of the hospital and back in Oak Forest rehab facility. He continues to have some swelling in his legs and determining next steps in his treatment.
  • Shirley Alston (my stepmother) – she is an excellent caregiver.
  • Jean Allison – She was in bad accident several weeks ago and is in rehab.
  • Sand Lomax – recently had surgery and continues to recuperate at home.
  • Sarah (my wife) – MRI follow up to determine options for treatment.
  • Nat Irvin – his father was hospitalized a few days ago.
